The Discomfort zone - The comfort zone - Success blocker no1 for women PART 4
We gravitate naturally towards being comfortable. If you’re offered a chair in a room with multiple open places to sit, you’re probably going to seek out the seat which looks like it will fit your body best, providing not just support but the perfect angle of the back and the right cushioning or support for the spine. You'll even want the chair in a position where the lighting is good, and you have a clear view.
Comfort.
Comfort is all about staying safe. It is all about things being predictable and life without demands. Comfort can be a very good thing – unless you want to grow and succeed in life. Comfort keeps us where we are, giving us no reason to challenge ourselves, learn new things, or discover what we're capable of doing.
In this blog series I will take you into the world of possibility. The last blog series was about comfort zones, why everyone loves them and how they hold you back. In this blog series I'll talk about discomfort and the science behind making yourself uncomfortable, and how discomfort can be used to propel yourself toward your goals.
Finally, you're going to learn a six-step system for making yourself comfortable with discomfort and even using it to springboard yourself into the life you’ve always dreamed of having.
Ready? Let’s get started! Consider this: if you stay too long in one comfort zone, you’ll never discover another. What if you’re missing out on a better comfort zone by not striving through to the next level? Imagine where you could be next! How to get there?
This is where the Discomfort Zone comes in.
Welcome to the other side of the coin. You can't know what comfort is unless you've been uncomfortable at some point in your life. Without one, the other has no value. The Discomfort Zone, though, has more purpose than to underscore when things are calm and serene. The Discomfort Zone is where all the magic happens. Of the two, the Discomfort Zone is where you’ll find the potential for all your goals and dreams to take flight.
What is Discomfort?
Uneasiness. Worry. Pain. Discomfort is defined by a slew of negative emotions, giving the impression that this is something to be avoided at all costs. If you doubt this, consider how many medications there are to take away pain or anxiety. How many systems are in place to erase worry from your life? Who in their right mind wants to be made uncomfortable?
At the same time, we tend to forget some very large truths about discomfort.
· Pain lets us know when something is wrong in our body so we can fix it.
· Worry shows us when we might need care in moving forward with a plan.
· Uneasiness is an instinct that alerts us when something is 'off' about a situation.
Instead of thinking of discomfort as the enemy, what if we considered it to be a signal, alerting us where something needs to change? Think of Discomfort as an indicator pointing at an opportunity for growth. It’s an open invitation to change your life by forcing you out of your Comfort Zone and into something grander.
Think of the Discomfort Zone as being ushered into life’s classroom. Will the lessons be hard? Sometimes, yes. But the outcome speaks for itself. Keep reading next week to find out how.
Now consider this: if you stay too long in one comfort zone, you’ll never discover another. What if you’re missing out on a better comfort zone by not striving through to the next level? Imagine where you could be next!
Imagine what your life would be like if you could teach yourself to enjoy a little Discomfort now and again.
