How women succeed in leadership

Women in leadership positions have made great strides in recent years. Women can and will take on more and more leadership positions. Diversity is the key to success and women in leadership positions have a big part to play in this. This is a positive development, as women in particular possess a variety of leadership qualities to be successful leaders. Research suggests that women tend to exhibit certain leadership qualities that are particularly effective in promoting a positive and productive work environment. Here are some examples:

5 leadership qualities of female leaders

Empathy: Women are often perceived as more empathetic and nurturing, which can help them build stronger relationships with team members and create a more collaborative and supportive work culture.

Communication: Women tend to be effective communicators in terms of listening and expressing themselves clearly. This can be particularly helpful in conflict resolution and building trust among team members. Strong communication is especially important for good leadership. Leaders who understand the needs of their staff are better able to lead their team and help them achieve challenging goals. Active listening, showing empathy and solution-oriented argumentation are skills that contribute to effective and positive cooperation. They help to discover the strengths and idiosyncrasies of each individual, to integrate them into the leadership process, and to create an appreciative working environment.

Flexibility: Women often adapt to changing circumstances and juggle multiple responsibilities. This can be especially valuable in fast-paced or unpredictable work environments.

Emotional Intelligence: Women tend to have high emotional intelligence, which involves understanding and managing one's own emotions as well as those of others. This can help them build strong, positive relationships with team members and navigate complex social dynamics.

Resilience: Women may face more obstacles and challenges than men in leadership positions, but research suggests that they are often more resilient in the face of adversity. This resilience can help them weather setbacks and emerge stronger and more determined.

 However, there is still a gender gap in business and women often face some challenges in becoming successful leaders. Here are some of the biggest challenges women face in leadership positions and five career tips that can help overcome them.

The glass ceiling: the glass ceiling is an invisible barrier that prevents women from rising to higher positions. Many women feel that they are not taken seriously or that their work and achievements are not valued enough.

Bias and stereotypes: Women often face gender bias and stereotypes in the workplace. They may be viewed as too emotional or weak to be effective leaders. 

Work-life balance: Women in leadership positions often have difficulties finding a work-life balance and struggle to balance their professional responsibilities with personal commitments.  They often have to work long hours and have little time for family,  friends and themselves.

Lack of Representation: Women are still underrepresented in leadership positions, making it difficult to find mentors and role models.

Imposter Syndrome: Many women experience imposter syndrome, doubting their own abilities and feeling like they don't deserve to be in their leadership roles.

Gender Pay Gap: Women often earn less than their male counterparts in leadership positions, which can make it difficult to negotiate salaries and advance their careers.

Find a Mentor: Seek out a mentor who can offer guidance, support, and feedback as you navigate your leadership role.

Develop Your Skills: Take advantage of opportunities to develop your skills, such as attending conferences, taking courses, or seeking additional training.

Network: It is important to build a strong professional network. Women should network with colleagues and leaders in their industry and sign up for mentoring programs. Networking helps to find career opportunities and increase your visibility.

Advocate for Yourself: Women should promote themselves by highlighting their skills and talents more. It is important to engage in challenging projects, seek feedback from colleagues and managers, and sign up for training and education. Self-promotion can help build confidence in one's abilities and advance one's career.

Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize self-care and make time for activities that help you recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Unfortunately, few women enter their first leadership position with confidence. More often, self-doubt and imposter syndrome is the day's order: Are my qualifications sufficient for the new challenge? Will I be able to combine my new job with my family? Am I really up to the task?

Knowing your own weaknesses AND strengths is important. But please not in the sense of "deficit thinking". On the contrary, develop a positive attitude towards yourself and your own abilities. This attitude can be summarized in the term (self-)empowerment.

Although women still face challenges in leadership positions, it is important to maintain courage and determination.
